Motor Running but No Water? 3 Reasons & How to Fix It
Scenario: It is 2:00 PM. Raju turns on his starter box. The Ampere meter shows the motor is taking load, the starter indicator is green, but the delivery pipe is bone dry. Not a drop of water.
👨🏽🌾 Raju (Customer): "Rao Garu! My motor is cheating me! It is making a humming sound, the electricity meter is spinning, but there is no water. Is the motor burnt?"
👷🏽♂️ Engineer Rao (Expert): "Relax, Raju. If the motor is humming and taking amps, it is NOT burnt. If it were burnt, your MCB would trip immediately.
If the motor runs but water doesn't come, it usually means the connection between the motor and the ground is broken. Let's check these 3 things immediately before you damage the pump."
Step 1: Check for "Air Lock" (New Installations)
The Symptom: You just installed the pump or haven't used it for months.
Engineer Rao says: "Sometimes an air bubble gets trapped in the impeller stages. The pump spins, but the air prevents water from lifting."
The Fix: Switch the motor ON and OFF quickly (3-4 times) in 2-second gaps. This 'kick' often breaks the air bubble.
Step 2: The "Summer Water Drop" (Most Common)
The Symptom: The Ampere meter needle is slightly lower than usual.
Engineer Rao says: "In Guntur summers, the groundwater level drops. If your pump is at 300 feet, but the water level dropped to 310 feet, your pump is running dry. Turn it off immediately! Dry running melts the bushes."
The Fix: You need to lower the pump. Come to Sagar Traders, buy 2-3 lengths of Column Pipe and extra Cable, and we will lower it by 20-30 feet.
Step 3: Delivery Pipe Leakage
The Symptom: You hear a splashing sound inside the borewell casing.
Engineer Rao says: "Your pump is working fine, but the HDPE pipe or a joint near the motor has burst. The water is being pumped up but falling back into the hole."
The Fix: The motor must be lifted out. We will need to replace the damaged pipe section.
👷🏽♂️ Engineer Rao's Verdict:
"Raju, check the Amps first.
- Low Amps? Water level dropped (Dry Run).
- Normal Amps? Pipe leakage or Pump Shaft broken.
Don't guess. Bring your starter box reading to us, or call our service team."
